I use a multiplicity of methods. None of these are “musts” – we don’t have to do them – but it may be that we would jointly choose to do some of them. I lay some importance on finding out and here is a little list of some tools which are useful:
Exploration of problems or needs by means of understanding the history behind them (if there was a history) and also how you feel about them.
Exploration of creative solutions by understand what things would look like if they were better.
Using standardised questionnaires which ask the same questions which thousands of others are asked and comparing the scores with the general trend.
Using questionnaires which are individually tailored and have no comparison with other people.
Incident analysis - that is picking out incidents recent or past which tell their own story
Experimental steps - based on ideas and techniques we decide to try out.
Model fitting. It is useful to make plans which describe how life looks and how behaviour works and compare.
Using, in a careful way, impressions and intuitions.
Using specific learning games which show directions.
Using books and Internet materials to identify some issues.
Using standard theories about personal distress and finding out how your concerns are similar or different.
You will have observed that there is a philosophy behind it. There is not just one angle or approach but probably several ways in which your concerns could be understood.
