Consulting
In my work I meet mainly people who have issues with some three main areas. The first area concerns feelings of pressure such as Confidence, Worry and Anxiety. I have a particular interest in Exam Worry and have practised in Higher Education for over three decades. Amongst the Anxiety type concerns I also class Obsessional worries [OCD] as part of this group. I am a member of Obsessive Action. Often, in step with the general guidelines from the National Institute for Clinical Excllence, my response to these Anxiety matters will utilise Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
The second main area of my provision concerns Low Self Esteem. This is something which bedevils many people and often stems from earlier years. I know about it myself as well. As part of this, one must include Depression. In this arena, I utilise the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy approach but I may well broaden it to include such adjuncts as Schema Therapy. The Personal Construct approach is useful as well in this regard. I tend not to mix the approaches I use and as such people would term me a Technical Eclectic.
The third area concerns Stress. In coping with stress problems, I have a Diploma in Multi Modal Therapy, a derivative of Behaviour Therapy, which directly approaches this area. Additionally, I often find that Anger Management is a helpful tool to employ.
I hope that these comments will enable you to see that title "Cognitive Behaviour Therapy North London" has a broader remit than is implied by just the words.
Ensuring Quality
It is a requirement that is asked of Counsellors, Psychotherapists and
Psychologists that they engage in a continual process of evaluation of their work. There are two purposes for that. One is to protect you from malpractice by virtue of the practitioner, me, going in a generally unsuitable direction becoming unstable, practising beyond competence, developing unreasonable skills and other matters. The second reason, in my view, is to ensure that I try to keep up to date. New ideas are coming out all the time and you would want to be assured that I am engaging with them.
I, therefore, as with any other properly accredited practitioner, undertake the following processes:
*
I consult with other practitioners who have differing skills on a regular basis where I discuss my style and decisions. This is usually termed "supervision". I spend over two hours per week on this work.
*
I consult for personal counselling myself usually in a short block of time a number of meetings.
*
I undertake training where I go away to meet with other professionals to learn skills and theory. Each year this is certainly in excess of thirty contact hours on average, it is many more. Last year over 100.
*
I subscribe to relevant Journals and I also conduct research and academic development
During the consultation process I may have reference to the work I do in discourse. Occasionally, I will wish to show a specific item – such as a test result. I may have made a tape recording (to which you would have consented) and I might play a small segment of this.
Ethics govern the conduct of this consultation:
o
If I have recourse to discuss a particular issue, I never identify the person.
o
Usually, my discussions focus on myself and development in general.
o
All discussion is regulated and purposeful.
o
If I need to discuss test outcomes then there is no identification of whose it is.
o
If I play a tape then it is for a small segment only with myself as the focus and in any case I will have asked your specific permission on this.
Usually, my clients are pleased that I review what I do and reassured that they are never identified. Sometimes my clients will ask what my reflections are from consultative processes.
